Got an electric car? Planning to buy one?
In the coming months, the
Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is working to install up to 76 electric car-charging stations throughout the metro area.
These will add to an already expanding network of electric car-charging infrastructure in Minneapolis and St. Paul. The $625,000 project has been made possible largely with federal funding, according to the agency’s Fran Crotty.
The project is part of a larger effort that began in the state several years ago with the coalition
Drive Electric Minnesota. “It’s a totally new frontier, so it’s a matter of trying to get electric vehicle technology adopted so that it does become mainstream,” Crotty says.
Anne Hunt, who works for the city of St. Paul, in Mayor Chris Coleman’s office, says that electric cars fit in with a number of the city’s sustainability goals. As one part of that, the city is trying to make its fleet more fuel-efficient, with light-duty trucks and cleaner fuels. “Electric vehicles are another example of trying to have cleaner transportation,” she says.
With such volatile gas prices, electric cars “provide stability in prices,” she adds. On top of that, “Consumers want to know they’re doing their part to improve air quality."
Here’s a list of electric car charging stations in St. Paul and Minneapolis, including some that are in planning stages. It’s a work in progress so let us know if you know of others that
The Line should add to the list.
